The Almanac falls open at December where we recall some of the events in and around the club over the years that might otherwise slip past us. This month we start with the national team coming to White Hart Lane. There are first, fast and record goals, new managers and players and more than our share of trouble. Left - Ledley King who turns up a couple of times. 1st - 1937 - White Hart Lane hosts England V Czechoslovakia and England win 5-4 with our own Willie Hall in the side (link - http://www.indiaspurs.com/blog/hotspur-towers-willie-hall1) 1st - 2012 - Jermain Defoe nets at Fulham as we win 3-0 and its also our 100th goal on that ground. 3rd - 1880 - Percy Humphries is born in Cambridge. He moves from Chelsea to Spurs. On the last day of the 1910 season he scores the goal that saves Spurs from relegation and sends Chelsea down. 3rd - 1994 - Teddy Sheringham scores a hat trick in a win up at Newcastle. (Link - http://www.indiaspurs.com/blog/edward-teddy-sheringham ) 3rd - 1956 - A friendly tie sees us beat Red Banner from Hungary 7-1 at The Lane and Alf Stokes has a hat trick. That's Alf on the right. 4th - 1965 Tottenham draw at Burnley 1-1 thanks to an Eddie Clayton goal while Frank Saul becomes the first Spurs man to be sent off in a league game since 1928. 4th - 2013 - A first Spurs goal for Vlad Chiriches in another win at Fulham. 4th - 1948 - Another goal and its Bill Nicholson’s first for the first team, we draw 1-1 also at Craven Cottage. 4th - 1954 - Nicholson plays in his last game at home to Everton. 5th - 1910 - Tottenham win the final of the London FA Charity Cup beating Fulham 2-1 6th - 1997 - Christian Gross is in charge for the first time as we lose at home to Chelsea. 8th - 1883 - Having beaten them at home earlier in the month we lose 1-3 away to Leyton Rovers, although we only field ten men. Bobby Buckle scores our only goal in both games. 8th - 1954 - Danny Blanchflower signs for Spurs as we beat Arsenal for his signature. His debut comes two days later. (link -http://www.indiaspurs.com/blog/ht-27-danny-blanchflower-part-1 ) 8th - 2008 - Ledley King plays his 250th game for Spurs and scores as we win 2-0 at West Ham. 9th - 2000 - Ledley pops up again and scores the fastest goal in PL history (9.7 seconds) as we draw at Bradford City in Ramon Vega’s last game. 9th - 1994 - The FA had imposed a penalty against Spurs of 12 points, this was reduced to six at the appeal. Chairman Alan sugar continued to fight and the penalty was withdrawn and Tottenham were also able to compete in the FA Cup. . 9th - 1993 - Danny Blanchflower passes away. 10th - 1975 - Another last game this time Cyril Knowles and a 2-2 draw with Everton. 12th - 1964 - Alan Gilzean joins us from Dundee and goes on to be one of our top goalscorers in the clubs history, see 19th. 13th - 1987 - After more than a hundred years the club plays its first competitive game on a Sunday and lose to Charlton.
13th - 1884 - The score is 0-0 V Woodbridge when the game is stopped for bad light after just 40 minutes. 14th - 2006 - Jermain Defoe again and this time its two goals V Bucharest in the UEFA Cup. 14th - 1912 - We win at Woolwich Arsenal 3-0 in a Division One game. That result helps send them down at the end of the season. Jimmy Cantrell scores two and Jimmy Seed are on the score sheet. 15th - 1995 - Another ban, this time Tottenham are banned by UEFA for not trying in the Intertoto Cup. Again the ban is lifted on appeal. (link - http://www.indiaspurs.com/blog/hotspur-towers-the-intertoto-cup ) 15th - 2001 - The 10,000th Premier League goal is scored by Les Ferdinand as we beat Fulham 4-0. 16th - 1895 - A meeting at the Eagle Public House and one of the founders Bobby Buckle (again) proposes that the club just thirteen years old, should adopt professionalism. 16th - 1899 - A 6-1 win away to Cowes in the Southern League is in vain as Cowes withdraw from the competition the same week and result is made void. David Copeland scored a hat trick. 16th - 1961 - Jimmy Greaves (above) scores a hat trick on his debut V Blackpool. part B of December will be published in two days.
