As we continue our celebration of White Hart Lane and its role in the history of the club we turn our attention to the man who designed the ground. His work can be found the length of the country as he quite simply designed the format for stadiums that we have known all our footballing lives.

Talking Tottenham once again peers into the world of advertising and related areas as we investigate what footballers will actually do to top up their wages. We start with Gary Lineker and another one from his long running series for Walkers crisps. I thought this one would appeal to my Indian readers. And a side order of trivia where necessary. George Graham led Spurs back into Europe after an absence of seven years and warned Tottenham they should guard against the unknown and asked the fans to be patience as the part timers from Zimbru were drawn in the first round. The Moldovan league had only been in existence eight years and Zimbru had won it seven times losing just two games in two seasons. The Tottenham Mysteries returns and over the coming weeks we will look at several more stories that seem incomplete or where the various accounts contradict each other as we try and unravel the facts. This first case I’m delighted to say is one that we have finally closed the file upon but the journey to reach that point was a long and winding one. So lets look back at The Oxford Affair. With a return to European action after the winter break we turn our attention to some European Memories, mostly from the managers and players, but a few others reflecting on some our exploits in previous years. There are tales of incredible pitch preparation, praying clowns, the bus is attacked, missing champagne and some football. We have amongst others Gareth Bale, Michael Dawson, Keith Burkenshaw, Graham Roberts, Ray Evans Terry Dyson and of course Bill Nicholson. Two years ago I featured some Tottenham tattoo's as a mild interest in between the more 'serious stuff.' Like a number of the subjects that Talking has tackled it led to more images arriving in the old in-box, and always good to know your out there. Anyway in the summer I complied a second set and thought that would be it! I had not planned another set thinking we must of covered every angle but if any 'different' designs turned up I'd slip them in somewhere. Then they just kept coming. So here for your mid-week coffee break diversion one last set where put you have put your skin where the heart is. Apart from Bill Nicholson and the twelve main players there were other people whose contribution to the double success requires acknowledging. There were five other players who made appearances during the season and the people behind the white line whose contributions ensured success. The five players were, Frank Saul, Tony Marchi, Ken Barton, John Smith and John Hollowbread. A quick sidetrack from the footy gossip for your midweek amusement. Following the success of the previous article we uncover several more feature films with Tottenham links. I was aware of a couple of these but thank you, to you the readers for sending in some more. These date from the quite recent right back to the early days of cinema. So if you’re got your choc-ices and are comfortable lets lower the lights and. action... One of the most talented footballers to play for Tottenham but it could be said he never quite fitted into the style of play that his different managers demanded. The Telegraph called him ‘a very special footballer, a triumph over matter and skill over strength.’ Tommy the man they called Harmer the Charmer played 222 games for Spurs scoring 51 times but he will be remembered as a creator and entertainer with a magical sleight of foot. |
