Teddy had two spells at the club from 1992 -97 and 2001 -03 reaching a total of 124 goals in 277 appearances. He sits at number eight in our all time goal scorers chart and in 2008 at was inducted into the Tottenham Hall of Fame. Teddy a lifelong Spurs supporter started at Millwall before going to Nottingham Forest. Where he worked under one of the great managers, Brian Clough. Brian normally called everyone ‘Young man’ but always referred to him as Edward and never Teddy. He joined Tottenham for a fee of just over two million pounds and very quickly became a fan favourite. When Teddy was asked about his impressions upon joining the club he replied "Well I'd played for the schoolboy sides for a year when I was about 14 and we always used to get tickets for home games. I remember thinking to myself that I'd love to play for Spurs one day, so coming back here to play as a professional was a dream come true. You watch all these famous players at White Hart Lane as a fan one minute, and then you're realising your dream the next."
He was joined later by Jurgen Klinsmann with who he formed an instant understanding. Jurgen later described Teddy as the best partner he played with. In 1997 he asked to leave Spurs as he felt he wanted to win some honours before he retired. He joined Manchester United for a fee of three and a half million pounds. At United he won the Champions League, the Premier League and the FA Cup. As well as being voted PFA and Football Writers Player of the Year in 2001. He was lured back to Tottenham on a free transfer by Glen Hoddle in 2001 and made captain. United had offered him an extra year on his contract. However Teddy said the chance to return to Tottenham was "like coming home".
In 2008 when he was inducted into the Hall of Fame on the same night as Clive Allen. He was asked “where would your two spells as a Spurs player rank amongst all the great moments you have experienced?” Teddy answered "I was probably in my prime during my first spell at Spurs. I think I arrived at the age of 26 and left around 31, which is the prime of any footballer. I also think I played some of the best football of my career during that time“.
