The U21 Premier League returns in new format. This is the second season of the U21 League. And our U21s kick off their season today, with an away match against Chelsea U21. Last season was exciting, a goal fest. We scored 82 goals in all. Though we topped our group we were unlucky to lose the final at Old Trafford. We finished runners up to Manchester United. (3-2). The format of the league has been changed this season. Instead of dividing the teams into 3 groups, there will be just one main group of 22 teams. Each team will play the opposing team just once, either home or away. The top 4 progress to the semi finals.
Each team can field 3 outfield players over the age of 21, plus the keeper can also be a over 21 player. We did see Kaboul, and Scott Parker play a couple of U21 matches to get back to fitness after an injury layoff. This season promises to be as great as the first one. Hoping we carry on the good form into season 2 as well. Some of the stars of last season have stepped up, and progressed into the senior team (Townsend, Carroll), some trying to break into the first XI (Ceballos) while others have gone on loan (Luongo, Pritchard etc). We’ll see a new crop of players this season. Most of the U18s will be ready to step up. Our Academy squad finished 3rd in the EuroFoot tournament last week, and we’ll definitely see some from that squad in the U21s this season. Some players to watch out for this season - Shaq Coulthirst, Kenneth McEvoy, Nabil Bentaleb. The U18s start their season a week later.
