Part of our celebration of White Hart Lane during this the last season in the grounds current guise has been a series of ‘snapshots in time’ on social media marking various events at the ground since our arrival in 1899. Now as the season approaches its climax we gather these ‘milestones’ together as part of our permanent tribute to the ground. As the season opens there are a number of events linked to our earliest days. 25th August, 2010 - The ground hosted its first home game in the Champions League, V Young Boys of Switzerland. Tottenham win 4-0 on the night in the second leg of the qualifying round to go through 6-3 over the two legs. (top picture Peter Crouch heading home). 25th August, 2011 - Our first home game in another European competition. This time it’s the Europa League. Having won 5-0 away to Hearts the second leg is a 0-0 draw. The game did see the first team debut of Harry Kane who would win a penalty and then see his shot saved. Hardly a game to set before Dave Mackay, a legend at both clubs who was making his last trip to WHL that night. http://www.indiaspurs.com/blog/hotspur-towers-europa-league-2012 26th August, 1933 - A Tottenham team wears numbered shirts for the first time when the Reserves play a London Combination game V Watford. (The first team won’t wear them for another five seasons, also at home V Watford). 26th August, 1939 - it’s a 1-1 draw with Birmingham which will be the first and last home game that season before the League is cancelled as World War 2 is declared. 26th August, 1961 - Terry Dyson (left) becomes the only Spurs player to score a hat trick in a competitive game V Arsenal as we win 4-3, Les Allen scored the other that day. 27th August, 1988 - there is no game at WHL as six hours before kickoff, the local authorities decline to issue the required Health and Safety certificate for the East Stand development and the match with Coventry City is called off. 28th August, 1933 - The late kick off for the game with Wolves is brought forward when it’s discovered the Band of the Grenadier Guards who have been booked to play before the match are unable to attend an evening game. Only 20.953 people can make the revised time at short notice but Spurs win 4-0 with a brace each for Taffy O’Callaghan and George Hunt. 30th August, 1930 - Ted Harper scores five times as Spurs beat Reading 7-1. It’s the first time a Spurs player hits five in a League game and won’t be done again for nearly 30 years. Ted scores three more hat tricks that same season and six in total to put him joint fourth in the hat trick charts alongside Jermain Defoe and Martin Chivers. Left - Ted Harper here at Everton in 1930. 31st August, 1946 - Birmingham City, the last visitors to WHL before World War Two were the first visitors to The Lane as the league re-starts. 31st August, 1960 - Spurs record the first hat trick in the double season as Bobby Smith scores it at home to Blackpool. You can the story of the Double @ http://www.indiaspurs.com/blog/the-double-chronicles September 1st September , 1919 - Spurs return home after spending the First World War playing away from The Lane when it was taken over during the conflict. Our first game back is a 4-0 win over Leicester. Cantrell 2, Bliss and a Clay penalty mark the homecoming. Following on from the Arsenal conspiracy to steal our Division One place we win the first seven games and were unbeaten in the first 12 as we set out to win the league by six points and win promotion on the pitch. 1st September, 1901 - The first Scottish side to visit WHL was Hearts. Wolverhampton Wanderers the FA Cup holders are beaten 3-0. http://www.indiaspurs.com/blog/hotspur-towers-wolves-1908 2nd September 1992 – Our first win in the new Premiership comes in our sixth game, at home to Sheffield United, 2-0 with Gordon Durie and Teddy Sheringham scoring the goals. 2nd September, 1916 - Chelsea are the visitors in a London Combination game. It will be the last one before the government commandeers WHL for the duration of World War One. 2nd September, 1964 - Frank Saul gets his only hat trick for Spurs as we beat Burnley 4-1. 3rd September, 1960 - The Double season and it’s the manner rather than the score that impresses the fans as we destroy Manchester United 4-1 at WHL. Left Bobby Smith attacks the United goal. 3rd September, 1925 - A Tottenham XI take on a Real Madrid side during that clubs first visit to England. The official opening game at White Hart Lane and Notts County are beaten 4-1.The attached article includes some more images from that game, and also the press’s first impressions of the new ground. Match Action below. http://www.indiaspurs.com/blog/hotspur-towers-notts-county-1899 5th September, 1882 - Pre White Hart Lane days but just a hundred yards away under a gaslight is where the founders gathered as it became too dark to continue playing and laid the idea of a football team. This day was when the first subscriptions collected. 5th Sept, 2006 - White Hart Lane sees Wales play Brazil. The South Americans win 2-0. There is plenty of Spurs interest on show as Bale, Gomes, Davies and Gilberto all play. 5th Sept, 1992 - When Andy Turner (below) scores the winner V Everton in a 2-1 at 17 years 166 days he becomes the youngest goal scorer in the PL. 7th September, 1901 - The first home game of the new season following our FA Cup triumph the year before sees Millwall Atheltic beaten 2-0 and 27,000 attend to continue the celebrations as the trophy is paraded around the ground. 7th September, 1968 - Two milestones arrive in the same game. Tottenham defeat Burnley 7-0 and the game sees Jimmy Greaves score the 100th competitive hat trick for Tottenham at WHL. Then Jimmy Robertson comes off the bench and becomes the first substitute to score for the club. 7th September,1985 - Ray Clemence (below right) plays his 1000th career match in the game with Newcastle which we win 5-1. A presentation is made by Pat Jennings. 8th September, 1982 - we are leading Southampton 1-0 when Glenn Hoddle is stretched off as Spurs go on to win 6-0. 8th September, 1990 - Paul Gascoigne scores the first of two hat tricks for the club, this one in a 3-0 win over Derby. His other one comes later the same month. 9th September, 1899 - The first competitive game is played at WHL. Tottenham beat QPR 1-0 in a Southern League tie which will see us win the League that season. 11,000 see Tom Smith score our first competitive goal on the ground. Tom Smith joined Spurs in May 1898 and spent four years with the club being a member of the side that won the Southern league and FA Cup. A quick outside right he was famous for the accurately of his crosses. He played for an England XI V their Scottish counterparts. At that time Spurs played in a variety if competitions and Tom made a total of 225 appearances scoring 55 goals including one in the 1901 Cup Final replay. He later returned to Spurs in 1907, to play in the 1901 cup final team at a benefit game. He also played cricket and rugby to a high standard and his son was the referee at the 1946 Cup Final. 9th September, 1907 - And the lowest gate ever for a competitive match at WHL as Tottenham entertain Bristol Rovers game in the Western League. The Western League was very much a second priority as we were also in the Southern League. Only 500 watch Spurs win 10-0. Pass scores 4, Reid 3, and Morris Walton and McNair one each. James Pass was born in India (see Connections – India) joined Spurs in 1907 and spent less than a year with the club as he failed to dislodge Bob Walker / Billy Minter from his inside right position. He still scored 11 goals in 31 games.
9th September, Tottenham’s 2,000th League game and Sheffield Wednesday leave the Lane after being beaten 2-1. Alan Gilzean and Frank Saul are on target. 9th September 1970 we beat Swansea 3-0 in the LC 2nd round as we start our run to our first LC success Martin Peters, Steve Perryman and Roger Morgan on target.
