The series saluting White Hart Lane which ran on Social media last season reaches mid January. Our journey down The Lane reaches a number of milestones. A club sells us their cup game, a wonderful comeback, there are penalties, shootouts and brothers. As well as player appearing using an alias ! 15th Jan 1914 – Having drawn the first game 5-5 at Leicester, Spurs win the First Round Cup Replay at WHL 2-0, Walden and Bliss scoring for Spurs. Straight after the game we sign Tommy Clay from the midland club. 16th Jan 1909 – One of the great comebacks in Tottenham history, Spurs in their first season in the Football league host first division Manchester City in the FA Cup. City went into a two goal lead but a Morris penalty, two from Minter plus one from Bobby Steel give us a 4-3 win. 16th January1913 – Having drawn 1- at the Lane with Blackpool in the FA Cup a few days earlier they meet in the replay, again at the Lane, as Blackpool at the time were attracting very low gates and ‘sold’ the replay to Tottenham, who won 6-1. 16th Jan. 2016 Ericksen 2 (top), Kane and Dembele score as we beat Sunderland 4-1 in the PL which is our 2,500th competitive match at WHL. 18th Jan. 1965 and Torquay who felt they were unlucky to draw 3-3 in the first round are sent out of the Cup in the replay by a Greaves hat trick, Gilzean and Robertson get the others in a 5-1 win. 18th Jan. 1982 – and amazing drama in the League Cup 5th round with Nottingham Forest. Tottenham win a penalty and Hoddle takes to see it saved. The ref orders a retake as defenders encroached in the area. Hoddle scores but the ref orders another retake as Mark Falco encroaches and the third attempt is saved! Only a very late mishit effort from Ardiles saves some blushes as Spurs win 1-0. 19th January 1994 – Tottenham’s first penalty shootout in the FA Cup and we beat Peterbourgh (bottom of Division One) in a FA Cup 3rd round replay 5-4. The first shot out at WHL since the 1984 UEFA Cup Final. Tottenham had scored a late equalizer in the first game and then taken the lead in the replay before they leveled the scores and took the game to extra time. The Spurs scorers were Caskey, Kerslake, Anderton, Barmby (who had scored in the game) and Sedgley. The hero was Ian Walker in goal who saved the 4th shot. 19th Jan 1983, and incredible scenes at WHL, at home to Burnley, bottom of the second division, Burnley sack the manager before the game and then watch as their side beat Spurs 1-4 and two of those were own goals from Graham Roberts. 19th Jan 1910 and Percy Humphries scores the first competitive hat trick at WHL when we beat Plymouth 7-1. 21st Jan 1961 The Double season, and the new year starts with a 4-2 win over Arsenal. Also on the 21st, 1967, The 2-0 win over Burnley sees us start an unbeaten run through the rest of that season and includes winning the FA Cup and on to 2nd Sept the following season when we lose (to Burnley). 22nd January 2008 and we beat Arsenal 5-1 in the League Cup, semi final. 23th January 2002 we beat Chelsea 5-1 in the League Cup semi final, below left. 24th January 1953 – Sonny Walters scores our 1,500th League goal at White Hart Lane. 25th January 1964 – Our 3-1 win at home to Aston Villa is our 800th league victory. 26th January 1903 – The first England international trial game at WHL sees the North beat the South 2-1. While on that day in 1935 the first sixty thousand plus crowd sees us beat Newcastle 2-0. 27th Jan 1999 and we draw 0-0 with Wimbledon in the first leg of the League Cup semi final on our way to winning the trophy. 27th Jan 1991 We beat Oxford 4-2 on our way to winning the FA Cup. Gasciogne scores twice. 27th Jan 1934 the 4th round FA Cup, sees Spurs go behind before beating West Ham 4-1 28th January 1911 – The first football league game at WHL to be abandoned is a 1-1 draw with Oldham when the game is called off at half time due to fog. 28th Jan. 1981- Enfield play Barnsley in the FA Cup, 4th round and lose 0-3.
29th Jan 1910 sees the three Steel brothers play in a game with Bradford City, (1). 29th Spurs 1921 and we beat Bradford City 4-0 at Home, a Seed hat trick (two of them in a minute) and Banks send us on the way to the 1921 Cup victory. 30th January 1904 – The team record the highest combined score in a Southern League game in a 7-4 win over Reading. 31st Jan 1968 - Joe Kinnear becomes the first Spur to be sent off in the FA Cup match. The game with Manchester United is won 1-0 in extra time with a goal from Jimmy Robertson. Jan 31st 1959 and Arsenals Len Julians (born in Tottenham) is the first player sent off in a NLD Jan 31st 1942 – Top England international Wilf Mannion plays for Spurs but not as a guest in a war time game. he appears under an alias as the government don’t want to tip off German spies that his regiment has been moved South to London.
