With the longest night rapidly approaching and today being the last home game before Christmas I thought we would take a look at some of the festive offerings from the club on the cover of the programmes over the years. So whilst we await this years cover a short diversion and some memories to reflect upon. We start in 1953 and a welcome to Portsmouth as the club wished football lovers everywhere a merry Christmas and the wish that 'the old ball will run well for you in 1954.' This was a 1-1 draw with Johnny Brooks scoring for Tottenham. A number of Christmas programmes have appeared in previously articles especially the Talking Tottenham Christmas Special, if you want to catch up on before this years edition,(1). Next its back to the golden age of programmes below left - Christmas Day 1928 and the cockerel surprises the chief with a seasonal greeting, (a 2-2 draw with Reading). Above right - Huddersfield were the visitors in 1933 and they expect the 'old bird to be tough.' In the season they finished as runners up and we were third. No cheer however as they took a 1-3 win. Above left - West Ham came on Boxing Day 1986 and were beaten 4-0 Clive Allen with two, Hodge and Waddle handing out the presents. Center - A more formal cover for the 1-0 win over Wolves in 1957. Right - 1963 and Spurs had a cracker as Ipswich went down 5-0 on Boxing Day. Jimmy Greaves scoring a hat trick against the then champions. Of course the holiday also sees the launch of the pantomime season and Bradford (1935) and right - Bury 1937 meant our players were cast in the production by the artist. Above left - the reigning champions Christmas dinner in 1951 featured on the cover of the (2-1 win) Boxing Day meeting with Derby. Center - 1955 and we were treated to some mistletoe for the visit of Luton (2-1) on the 24th. Back in 1938 (right) Santa handed out presents but only a 1-1 draw with Southampton. Oddly during the 70's and 80's the club didn't feature the holiday unless the game actually fell during that period. Last up - Santa again this time in 1954 before our 1-1 draw with Villa.
