The Almanac was suggested by the readers panel and its where we take a look back across the November’s of years gone in order to allow me to select a cross section of some of the events, interesting stories and characters that have helped shape the history of the club, with a few small sidesteps. After several formats I decided to go with date order, rather than grouping by event or chronological. This isn’t meant to be a comprehensive listing. Part B will be published in a few days. 1st -1947 - There was a debut goal for Eddie Baily on the 1st in 1947 in a 4-0 win as we beat Brentford. Len ‘The Duke’ Duquemin scored the other three. 1st - 1893 - Tottenham were in trouble as The Council of London FA delivered their findings in the famous ‘Ernie Payne Boots affair’ which saw the club were suspended for two weeks and would be a stepping stone on the path to turning professional. 1st - 1961 - Tottenham’s European Cup campaign sees Frank Saul score twice as we win 3-1 at Feyenoord. Dyson scores the other. The score line flatters Tottenham slightly as the Dutch hit the woodwork several times. After the game Nicholson says ‘We muddled through that’s all you can say. Our mistakes there were so many I don’t know where to start.’ 2nd - 1895 - More controversy in our early days after we lose 2-4 at The Vampires in the FA Cup Second Qualifying Round. The club complained after the game that the pitch was incorrectly marked and a replay was ordered which Spurs would win. It wasn’t unusual at that time for this sort of complaint and shortly afterwards the FA would rule that complaints of this nature must be made before the game. 2nd - 2010 - Much more recently sees Inter Milan come to the Lane in a Champions League match and Spurs win 3-1. Van der Vaart, Crouch and Pavlyuchenko are on target. 2nd - 1898 - Another fine victory came a few years earlier when we won 6-2 away to the Royal Engineers. Five of our goals coming from Kenny McKay. The Royal Engineers had won the FA Cup twice the last in 1875. 2nd - 1940 - The game with Luton is abandoned after a hour with the score 1-1 because of an air raid. nd - 1971 - The game with Nantes sees them with 12 men on the pitch at one point due to confusion at a substitution. We still won 1-0. 3rd - 1982 - We go out of Europe after losing 1-4 away to Bayern Munich. The fog was so thick that fans ask the players at the airport to describe the goals. 3rd - 1924 - The London Professional Floodlight Charity Fund game V Clapton Orient goes to extra time. Spurs are 1-2 down after 20 minutes and the ref calls the game off due to bad light. th - 1955 - Maurice Norman, The Colossus of Tottenham signs for Tottenham from Norwich and goes on to become an England international and part of the Double team. 4th - 1980 - Arsenal are knocked out of the League Cup when Ossie Ardiles hits the winner. 4th - 1899 - We beat Thames Ironworks (later West Ham) 7-0 in the Southern League. 5th - 1966 - Nayim is born in Morocco he would join us from Baraclona on loan before signing a permanent deal. A great favourite of the Spurs fans he returns to Spain in 1993 to enhance his international chances. He will be remembered for the goal he scored after he left Spurs. It came against Arsenal in the dying minutes of the European Cup Winners Cup Final when he lopped the goalkeeper with an effort from the halfway line. 5th - 1994 - Steve Perryman is in charge of the team for just one game as caretaker boss. Sadly it’s a 0-2 defeat away at Blackburn. 5th - 2006 - Our first PL win over Chelsea is a 2-1 win at home with Michael Dawson and Aaron Lennon the heroes. 6th - 1899 - Goalkeeper Charles Ambler’s last game is a 8-0 win over Chatham in the Southern District Combination. 7th - 1912 - Another baby is born a few years earlier, this time in Waunllwyd outside Ebbw Vale. Micky Hazard hit’s a hat trick as we win 3-2. 15th - 1899 - Tom Smith, John Cameron and John Kirwan score for us in a 3-3 draw away to Bristol City in the Southern District Combination.
