As we have previously seen the advertising world has attempted to convince us that their products will enhance our lives and make us better footballers just by following the same lifestyle as our heroes. Here for your enjoyment is the latest set revolving around Tottenham from across the years. The top picture is for Double Diamond beer and their catchphrase over a number of ads was - 'I'm only here for the beer.' Right - Dundee FC produced a limited blend of Whiskey, one for ever goal Alan Gilzean scored for that club. They presented a bottle to THFC. Some ads try to sell their product through famous faces and left we have Ronnie Corbett and Ronnie Barker getting us to use Hertz car hire, in the last moment of the ad we find a non speaking Jimmy Greaves sitting in Corbett's car. Of course we don't always have famous faces to look at, as below we have England manager (and Spurs fan) Gareth Southgate. This was for Pizza Hut and featured various England players who had 'blown it' during England penalty shoot outs hiding their faces. Chris Waddle was also in the ad, sorry couldn't find pic of him, but to be honest all paper bags tend to look the same to me! Some footballers go even greater lengths to look silly, Gary Lineker has done a long series of adverts for Walker crisps over the years so maybe we shouldn't be too surprised at some of the outfits he has turned up in. I hope you notice I didn't do the 'crisp finisher' joke. Lets pop back to the 1926-27 season and Compton's Gravy Salt ran a series with various clubs depicted on their packets. And whoo, betide any mum who came home with the wrong team in her shopping basket. Some of our ads are missing ! Dave Mackay did do an ad for Tartan Beer, even if he didnt drink it and his face appeared on the sides of buses promoting it. After a number of Advertising and Scottish brewery archives have tried we cant find it!! So would you settle for one of the beermats from the same campaign. There are other ads still 'out there' if anyone can help. Pat Jennings did one dressed as an oil filter, unfortunately even the nice chap at Unipart cant find a still pic in their archive. I suspect you can find it on You tube if you want it. Paul Gascoigne did one for Woolworths' chain store (I'm told, I don't remember it) that also is missing in action. I have a few others I'm still digging for but if anyone knows of, or even better has a image of. any Spurs related adverts that haven't appeared in this series, so far, do contact me. Mind there's a few more in the file I'm working through slowly. Above Danny Blanchflower used Simlam boots, or right was it Adidas? along with his team mates here before the 1962 Cup Final. the previous 'breaks' can be found @ http://www.indiaspurs.com/blog/talking-tottenham-the-1st-ad-break http://www.indiaspurs.com/blog/talking-tottenham-2nd-ad-break and http://www.indiaspurs.com/blog/talking-tottenham-the-3rd-ad-break David Ginola has done various ads including this one for L'oreal hair products, well he was worth it. Trivia - Greaves on Mackay - 'Dave Mackay wasn’t just the hardest man on his generation he is also the greatest player to ever wear a Tottenham shirt, Dave had everything, power, strength skill stamina drive and above all infectious enthusiasm he was a really hard man and a man of action but he was always scrupulously fair' Paul Gascoigne, and here he is with boxer Henry Cooper and promoting Brut aftershave. Gazza said "I hadn't really much of a clue about what was going on, and what all these deals meant, I was endorsing all sorts of things, from lunchboxes, calendars, bedroom rugs, t-shirts, keyrings and shell suits." One for the club then, and its Hoddle and Ardiles and this is part of the photo shoot to promote the Le Coq kits that the club was wearing at the time. Thanks for the feedback on this series I didnt realise it would be so popular (maybe thats how ads work!) Don't forget do drop in at the Whitehall Tavern not only is it a noted Spurs house as you can see the scores from all the important games are displayed. That was from 1914, so before wall to wall TV coverage of course. COYS Keith Harrison. t- Keith 16024542 f- https://www.facebook.com/keith.harrison.9659 You can my full archive at - View Full Bio
