Madonna, Kylie and Gazza, what a way to kick off the latest collection of cover stories as we seek out Spurs and where they have turned up on the news-stands over the years. Gazza took time out from his footy to have a record career (see The Tottenham Juke Box) and here appears on the front cover of Smash Hits magazine. As we look back over eighty years and uncover some unexpected titles.
Cover Stories started as a quick read-bite for those nights when kick off was in the small hours of the morning but certainly struck a cord with the readers, as this third group proves. Thanks for the covers you sent in. Anyone has any, especially non football publications, do contact me.
A Football magazine to start however and Martin Chivers makes the cover of Back Pass.
Below the Radio Times has featured Spurs over the years, left we have Former chairman Alan Sugar in his role ruling 'The Apprentice. '
Center - Steve Perryman and the 1982 Cup Final and right
Danny Blanchflower and the 1962 version.
A bit of a surprise to find Private Eye featuring football but its 1996 and the Euros come to England and Terry Venables makes the cover saying he wished he could pick German players for his team.
Below Left- Gary Lineker makes the cover of Match as he joins Spurs.
Center Eddie Baily and Les Medley are on Sports International.
Whilst right the short lived Football Supporter March '69 had Jimmy Greaves.
The Midland based Soccer Star, 12th March 1955 and Ron Reynolds offers 'a prayer in vain' watched by Alf Ramsey as the visitors score at WHL. The week before we drew 2-2 with Manchester City at home. The paper also reports the 1894 Boot Incident, one suspects Ernie Payne. In which case a story we covered in the Northumberland Days series.
Below Left - Gilzean from the Arsenal game '68 makes the Charles Buchan's magazine. Center our own supporters club and the Lilywhite (with Les Bennett) from April 1951. Right - which later became 'Team' this May 1964. Featuring Dave Mackay.
Not Spurs but from May 1937 and can you believe they carry a story about a million pound winger?
