Steffen first joined us from Borussia Dortmund a few days before Christmas in 1998. In five years at Tottenham the midfielder won the League cup (1999) but never scored a goal in his 131 competitive appearances. Admired by the fans for his commitment to the club on the field he has been seen on the terraces with them since his playing days. When he first signed for Spurs we played Wimbledon five times in his first eight games. Leaving his family in Germany to once ask ‘are there only two teams in England?’ He did score for Tottenham in a friendly game at Stevenage in July 2001. One of eleven substitutions at half time Steffen scored our sixth goal with 12 minutes left as Spurs won 8-1. He won twenty one full international caps for Germany including the 1996 European Championship triumph, although he was injured in the semi final and missed the final. He was named in the 1998 World Cup squad but was injured and only made the bench in the quarter finals as Germany were knocked out. Steffen also played in the Olympic side, 1992. After he retired he coached the German national side at various youth levels and was assistant coach to Nigerian for the duration of the African Cup of Nations in 2007/08. He was the clubs assistant coach during the time of Villa-Boas when he was known for his celebrations of goals. Since then he has taken on various ambassadorial roles for the club.
He has been admitted to the Tottenham Hall of Fame. Did you know he once appeared on the quiz show ‘They think it’s all over’ with Boris Becker in an England V German special.
