Christian, a Berliner, holds a special place in Tottenham’s history as he was the first man to play in the final of the World Cup as a Spurs player. This occurred during the 2002 tournament unfortunately He ended up on the losing side to Brazil. He had joined Spurs from Liverpool in 2001 and was with us until 2004 before injuries and a desire to return to German brought his time with us to an end. During a game with Charlton on Boxing Day 2002 he picked up an injury. During that evening it became so painful he called the club doctor and that evening underwent an emergency operation. The surgeon said any further delay and he might have lost his leg. Christian played 55 games for us with ten goals, including diving headers and some wonderful long range shots., including one V Arsenal. He also scored for Tottenham in the League Cup final of 2002, not bad for a left back. He made the headlines during his time at Spurs for the wrong reasons when Liverpool were found guilty of having made an illegal approach for him when he was a Middlesborough player. Left - With an interesting haircut during the World Cup 2002. Before arriving at Spurs he had won the UEFA Cup and the championships in Germany and Italy.
He played in every game of the 2002 World Cup and was a member of the German side that won the Euros in 1996 and in addition to his 72 full caps (nine goals) he represented Germany at U18, 19, 20 and 21 level as well as being in their Olympic side in 1992. Since retiring he has held a number of positions including national coach at U18 and 19 levels. Christian as well as playing in the North London derby has also appeared in the local derbies on Merseyside, in Munich and Milan. It’s thought he is the only player to have collected all four. Sporting the obvious nickname ‘Zagger.’ Christian was a popular figure with the fans and he still supports Spurs on social media.
