With the awards season moving into top gear, here is a quick look at some of the awards that Tottenham players have won in previous seasons. The two major awards are the Professional Footballers (PFA) and the Football Writers (FWA). There are some other minor awards and we will return to them at a later date, but if you know any please add them to the comments for inclusion.

Pat Jennings won the FWA in 1973 and then the PFA in 1976, thus becoming the first person to win both. The PFA also presented him with a Merit Award in 1986. In 1987 Clive Allen won both awards as did David Ginola in 1999. Gareth Bale then went one better by winning the double and the PFA Young Player of the Year last season. That was the third time the Young Player award had come to Tottenham. Kyle Walker had won it the year before and Glenn Hoddle back in 1980.

Other players with Spurs links that have won the PFA while at other clubs are current first team coach Les ferdninard in 1996,Teddy Sheringham, 2001 and Gary Lineker in 1986. Winners of the Young Players award who later found their way to White Hart Lane are Paul Walsh in 1986, Paul Gascoigne 1988, Jermaine Jenas in 2003 and Scott Parker 2004.

The PFA has also presented Merit Awards to Bill Nicholson 1984 and Gary Mabbutt in 2000.

The first Winner of the FWA from Tottenham was Danny Blanchflower who won in 1958, the year he captained his country to the World Cup Finals. He couldn’t attend the presentation as that night he was playing for London in the Inter-Cities Cup (1).  He then won the award again  in 1961.

Other FWA winners are Steve Perryman, 1982 and Gary Lineker in 1992, to add his PFA in 1986 and the FWA awarded Gary a Merit trophy in 1997. The next Spurs player to be honored by the FWA was Jurgen Klinsmann in 1995.

Players with Tottenham links who have picked up the FWA awards are Dave Mackay in 1969, Alan Mullery 1975, Chris Waddle 1993, Teddy Sheringham 2001 and Scott Parker in 2011.

The PFA also announce the Team of the Season and last year this included Jan Vertonghen and Gareth Bale alongside former Spur Michael Carrick.

Former Tottenham youngsters who were included in the various Divisional awards last season were Charlie Daniels (Division 1) and in Division 2, Joseph Martin  and Jacques Maghoma.

With nine winners of the FWA, only one club has won it more often than Tottenham.

A third major Sporting award is the BBC Personality of the Year award, although this is presented in December. Competing against all sports Tottenham won the team award in 1961. You can see Sports Review of the Year by going to

Then under 1961,  click on full programme.

Tottenham are on in first few minutes and well worth watching for the interview between David Colman and Danny Blanchflower. The programme will also show how far sports broadcasting has advanced in the last fifty years. Also at the BBC Paul Gascoigne won the Sportsman of the Year award in 1990. Incidentally Gary Lineker came third in 1991. He would of course co-host the event in later years. Dave Mackay was fifth in 1960.
