Where we try and uncover images relating to Spurs that deserve another airing and not the usual suspects that resurface regularly. Set Five starts with an off-duty moment. The top picture dates back to 1962 and the publican of the White Hart (sorry can’t remember his name) that stood at the top of what became Bill Nicholson Way was a western gun enthusiast, cowboy dramas were on the telly every night in those far off days. I think he actually held a record for 'quick draws'. Here he is having taken his sidearm from the holster and shows it to John White, Peter Baker, Cliff Jones, John Hollowbread and Mel Hopkins. I don’t know if they needed the shooting practice!! I’m fairly sure the pub did not have too much trouble in those days. I did see his pic a few years back with a suggestion that it was a different pub, however it was certainly the White Hart. Next up we trip back to 1921. In the week before the FA Cup Final the team went off for a ‘rest’ at Birkdale on the Lancashire coast. So let’s hope they took their golf clubs. It clearly worked as they beat Wolves in the final. The lads pictured enjoying a bracing walk are, Left to right - Thomas 'Tommy' Clay, Robert 'Bob' McDonald, Alexander 'Alex' Lindsay, Alexander 'Alex' Hunter, Bert Smith, Matthew 'Matt' Forster, James 'Jimmy' Archibald, Andrew 'Andy' Thompson and Charles 'Charlie' Wilson. That winning feeling continues and next up is Alan Mullery, Its 1972 and having been recalled from Fulham on loan, he had gone there to get match fit after injury, he captains and leads the side to UEFA Cup Final victory. And he scored the winning goal, talk about fairy tale. Another winner takes us to Anfield and the FA Cup 6th Round in 1995. Liverpool took the lead, Sheringham scored and then with seconds to play Jurgen Klinsman pops in the winner. He seemed quite pleased. Things were a little calmer when we travelled to Doncaster for a League Cup tie in 2009. Huddlestone, O’Hara, Crouch, Bentley and Pavlyuchenko see us home 5-1 in the Round 2 game. Every set I try and find a real good olden. In this case it’s the ladies who worked at White Hart Lane during WW1 when the ground was taken over and used to make gas masks. Here in July 1916 they have popped out on to the terraces for some fresh air, not forgetting their gas hoods. Turning back to 1984 and the UEFA Cup Final. It’s the end of extra time and the scores are level. Before moving to the penalty shootout Tony Parks grabs a quiet word with the goalkeeping great Ray Clemence. There is another image from this game with Tony watching the shootout in Set Two. Popping back to 1933 and some lucky schoolboy is getting a master class from Arthur Grimsdell. Arthur led Spurs to FA Cup victory in 1921 and captained England, can’t be bad. Despite a crowded penalty area the goalie remain claim under the pressure. Its Ray Clemence again, this time we catch up with him at the old training ground. Taking a moment before an extended autograph session by the looks of it. Finally in this set as we met our good neighbours this weekend, we have Graham Roberts here at Highbury where the fans really loved him, they would always wave to him, sometimes with both fingers.
Here he helps their Charlie Nichols get closer to the home fans, well at least the ones in rows C and D! New Years Day and Graham wanted to get 1986 off to a good. Every Picture runs initially on my FB and T pages, see below, then appears as a complete set here on India Spurs, along with endless other goodies. If you have any Spurs related images that you feel deserve another airing then do get in touch otherwise Set Six will pop up in the near future.
