In which we meet Lewis Holtby. Here having scored his first Spurs goal he celebrated by doing a 'Klinsmann dive.'

As well as discovering the World Cup that never was and some other connections.

Did you know that Germany had been shortlisted to host the World Cup in either 1942 or 1946 but the Second World War  meant neither competition was held.

Lewis Holtby joined Spurs from Schalke O4 in 2013, born in Germany of an English father. His debut was away to Norwich and his first goal came in the Europa League against Dinamo Tbilisi, and then in the league away to Fulham who he would later join on loan. He played 42 games with three goals for Spurs before moving to Hamburg. He has played for Germany at various levels and skippered the Under 21 side in the European Championships and has also won three full caps.

Other players from the country are featured in the Profiles series include,  Ziege (below left), Klinsmann and  Seeburg. These can be found

Steffan Freund is scheduled to join this group in the next few weeks.

Tottenham visited Germany in the summers of 1975 and 76. In 1975 we drew with Rot-Weiss Essen and Hanover. We lost the game with Karlsruher. The only victory on the tour coming after we moved to Holland. The following summer we played five games starting with a  win over Vii Osnabruck. We then lost to Eintracht Frankfurt and Cologne before we returned to winning ways beating KSV Baunatal. Finishing the trip beating FV Bad Honnef.

John Brearley (picture above in 1905) joined us from Everton in 1903 and played over a hundred games for us scoring sixteen times. He later coached in Berlin and at the outbreak of World War One was imprisoned (along with former manager John Cameron). Arthur Archer had also coached in Germany but had moved to Belgium just before the war and escaped back to England.
