With five men included in this summers England squad we take a look at what milestones and records they might reach with this look back at previous involvement in World Cup Finals.

To date twenty Tottenham men have played for England in the World Cup finals. Leading the way with seven appearances each we have three players, Gary Lineker (top), Glenn Hoddle and Jimmy Greaves.

Greaves, Lennon and Hoddle are the only players to appear in more than one finals tournament. Norman was in two squads but only played in one tournament.

The other players appearing are –
6 – Gascoigne,
5 –Lennon and Robinson,
4 – Norman, Mullery, Peters, Waddle, Sheringham. Campbell and Anderton
3 – Ramsey and Defoe.
2 – Stevens and Crouch
1 – King, Carrick and Baily

That’s an appearance total of 78.  All of Sheringham, Crouch and Stevens appearances came as substitutes.
The record for the number of Spurs players in the England squad is five and the number appearing is four both set in 2010 and both beating the previous records by one both set in 2006.

Eight Tottenham players made the squad but not the playing field, Bill Nicholson and Ted Ditchburn (1950), Maurice Norman and Bobby Smith(58), Ray Clemence (82), Les Ferdinard (98) Jermain Jenas (06) and Michael Dawson (2010).

The first man to appear was Alf Ramsey on 25th June who played in all three games played in 1950. He was joined in the third match by Eddie Baily. The latest English man to make his World Cup debut was Jermain Defoe on 18th June 2010 when he came on as a substitute in the 74th minute of the 0-0 draw with Algeria.

Prior to this summer England has competed in fourteen tournaments. On two of those occasions no Spurs players were included in the squad and in 1958 we had two but neither played.  England did not enter the first three competitions. They have also failed to qualify for the finals on three occasions.

To date they have played 62 times in the finals and have won 26, drawn 20 and lost 16 with a goal difference of 79-56.

Appearances by Spurs players for other countries in the tournaments will be covered in the FIFA Files no 3, appearing next. Tottenham players have scored nine times for England in the World Cup. These and the ones scored for other countries will be in FIFA Files 4, both appearing over the coming few days.

The Connections series for England and other countries, The Flying Down to Rio series from 2014 and summer’s FIFA Files can all be found

A number of sources actually conflict on line-ups etc, no great surprise, these figures have been based on the information provided by  FIFA, THFC and The FA.
