In the build up to the World Cup we identify a few  Spurs / World Cup landmarks and statistics for you to keep an eye on during the summer. In the next article we will look at appearances and goals, details at the end of this article, but today we start with the England captaincy (1) and their goal scoring records. There is also two club records on the England scene set since the last in this series.

The England trip to France in June 2017 for a friendly match saw Spurs start with four men, Captain Harry Kane (who scored twice), Eric Dier (top), Dele Alli, and Kieran Trippier. When they were joined at half time by Kyle Walker Spurs had five men on the field for the national side equaling the club record first achieved in 1987 and equaled twice since, in 2006 and 16.

Trippier became out 77th international for England and no English club has supplied more players to the national side, (2). We of course also had Hugo Lloris playing for France whilst Moussa Sissoko was an unused substitute.

Going into this summers World Cup no Tottenham man has captained his team in a major international tournament. Harry Kane and Martin Peters have done so in qualifying games.

The Spurs man who has led England most often (3) is Gary Lineker who did so 18 times in 38 games. He also scored 10 times in doing so (one a pen) and included a four goal haul V Malaysia. Next comes Vivian Woodward who led the team 12 times in 21 games and is the leading marksman in this group with 20 goals. Scoring three or more goals on four occasions.

Then we have two men who have led England four times. Harry Kane and Martin Peters. Martin won 34 caps as a Spur. While Harry has skippered the side four times to date winning 23 caps. Three of those were World Cup qualifiers. In his four games he has also scored five times (one pen). Making him the third highest Tottenham goal scoring captain and he is the only Englishman man to score every time he has led the national side.

Captain on three occasions we have Arthur Grimsdell (out of six games), Alf Ramsey (out of 31) and who scored three times, all penalties and joining them in March was Eric Dier as he won his 25th cap. Sol Campbell (73 games) did it twice and Alan Mullery and Scott Parker both wore the armband once.

Woodward, Lineker and Kane all scored on their captaincy debuts.

For those of you wishing to chart the progress of the current batch of players and mark landmarks the appearances as a Spurs player at the World Cup Finals for England will feature in England 11 which is scheduled in the near future when the domestic season ends. Appearances for other countries and all World Cup goals will be included in the FIFA Files series shortly afterwards.

The Connections series for England and other countries, The Flying Down to Rio series from 2014 and summer’s FIFA Files can all be found @
