The almanac arrives in January as we dig out some of the stories that might otherwise slip past us unnoticed that occurred this month in previous. With goals galore, how to start the year off as well as firsts and lasts not forgetting a few birthday boys and goalscoring keepers. Let us start back in 1985 for a dream start to the year. Tottenham are top of the table as the year dawns and they travel to Arsenal on the 1st. where we win 2-1. Our goals from Mark Falco and Garth Crooks seal the points. 1st – 2014 – We win at Old Trafford when Adebayor and Eriksen score in another 2-1 win. 1st – 1996 – This time we beat United 4-1 at home. Armstrong has 2, Sheringham and Campbell one each. It’s the first time United concede four in the PL. 2nd - 1993 – We beat Non-league Marlow 5-1 in an away game (at White Hart Lane) as we start on the FA Cup trail with goals by Sherringham, Barmby 2 and Samways 2. 2nd – 1909 – Billy Minter scores twice and Middlemass once as we win 3-0 at the now departed Leeds City in our first Football League season and we are promoted. 3rd – 2000 - The first game of this Millennium and a 1-0 win sees Liverpool lose at the Lane. This time it’s Chris Armstrong on the score sheet. 4th – 2005 – A Pedro Mendes (below) strike is not given despite being well over the line and Manchester United get away with a draw at Old Trafford. 5th – 1895 – We play London Welsh (not the rugby team) in the Amateur Cup and it’s a 3-3 draw. 6th - 1912 – West Brom are the visitors again but fog brings the game to a end after 57 minutes with the score still 0-0. 6th - 2001 – A nail biting Cup match at Leyton Orient sees Gary Doherty snatch a late winner. 6th – 1900 – The first match in the last Millennium and we draw 0-0 away to QPR in our Southern League Championship season. The first goal of that Millennium arrives two days later in a 3-2 win over Southern in the Southern District Combination, curtsey of John Cameron. 7th – 1995 – There is more non league action as Altrincham are overcome 3-0 in the FA Cup third round replay. Sheringham, Stuart Nethercott and Ronny Rosenthal hit our goals at Manchester City’s Maine Road ground. 7th – 1984 - Graham Roberts has a cup tie to remember. He goes in goal for Ray Clemence at Fulham when we draw 0-0 and makes several good saves. In the replay (11th) he scores as we win the replay 2-0. Archibald gets the other goal. 9th - 2011 – Anyone who saw the game with remember Andros Townsend getting a ’typical’ goal from outside the box on debut as we go back to Cup action and a win at home to Charlton. 9th – 1905 – The Southern Charity Cup semi-final V West Ham sees us win 10-0. Woodward gets five of them. It’s also the first time we score double figures in a competitive game. 9th- 1975 – Manchester United in the Cup are beaten with an Ardiles wonder goal in the dying moments. Glenn Hoddle played much of the game in goal for us. 10th – 1970 – Roger Morgan and Jimmy Greaves score as we beat Derby 2-1 at home. It will be Jimmy’s last goal for the club. 10th – 1946 – With no League programme that season the Cup is a two legged affair for one season and we lose to Brentford 0-2 in the second leg having drawn the first on the 5th. 10th – 1914 – There is better Cup news as we draw 5-5 at Leicester Fosse (later City). The replay sees us win 2-0 (15th). left - The goal scoring goalie, Joe Nicholls. 12th – 1935 – Cup holders Manchester City come to WHL and Spurs win 1-0 with a Willie Evans goal. 13th - 1923 –Its Cup fever and another hat full of goals as non league Worksop Town earn a draw at WHL on a dreadful icy pitch. The replay (at WHL) two days later is 9-0. Tich handley gets a hat trick but Alex Lindsay scores four. 14th - 1899 - The Southern League match ends 2-4 at Gravsend United. Bill Joyce gets both our goals. 15th – 1898 – The year before and Bill Joyce again and this time he goes one better with a hat-trick against Northfleet (our future nursery side) in a Southern League game that ends 4-0. 15th – 2016 - Eric Dier celebates as he turns 22 15th - 1915 - Our goalie Joe Nicholls (above) steps up to score from a penalty as our A team beats Arsenal 12-2 when they visit the Lane for the first time. 16th – 1909 – We turn Cup giant killers as Second Division Tottenham beat top flight Manchester City away 4-3 in our first meeting, after being two nil behind. Billy Minter has two goals. Tom Morris and Bobby Steel have the others. 16th - 1999 - The home game with Wimbledon sees Colin Calderwood play his last game as Mauricio Taricco makes his Spurs debut. 17th - 1998 - Jurgen Klinsmann has the first goal of his second spell at Tottenham as we beat West Ham 1-0. 18th – 1930 – Ted Harper has a hat trick in a 6-1 win over Blackpool, but they still win the league as we finish 12th, the lowest finish in our history. 18th – 1982 – Hoddle has a penalty saved in the League Cup game with Nottingham Forest. The referee wants it retaken as the defenders encroached. Hoddle scores but this time Tottenham encroached. The third attempt was again saved. Spurs go through from a Ardiles goal. right - Klinsmann and Rosenthal 19th - 1970 - Steffen Freund born in Brandenburg.
20th – 1951 – Tottenham on route to the Championship beat Wolves 2-1 at home. McClellan and Walters scoring for us. 21st – 2009 – There is a debut for Ben Alnwick in goal in a 2-3 defeat at Burnley but it sees us through to the League Cup Final. 22nd - 1955 - Sheffield Wednesday are hammered 7-2 in our First Division game at home. Johnny Gavin and Johnny Brooks hit two each. Duquemin, Baily and Robb the others. 22nd – 2000 – It’s the last game for Justin Edinburgh as we lose at home to Sheffield Wednesday, but they still go down. 22nd - 1898 - That man again, Bill Joyce scores four as we beat Wolverton 7-1 in the Southern League. 22nd – 2008 – The League Cup semi-final second leg sees Tottenham thrash Arsenal 5-1 to reach the final. 23rd – 2002 – Another League Cup semi-final second leg and Chelsea are beaten 5-1. 24th - 1981 - Terry Yorath play his last game as we beat Hull City in a FA Cup game as Archibald and Crooks get the goals. 24th – 1975 – The Scots are on song when with both sides out of the Cup we play a friendly at Watford. McNabb, Conn and Duncan get our goals in a 3-2 victory. 24th - 1885 – We was robbed. The home game with Victoria Wanderers sees us 4-0 up after an hour when the game is abandoned. 25th – 1967 – Happy birthday to David Ginola. 27th - 1934 – We go behind but beat West Ham 4-1 in another Cup meeting. George Hunt and Willie Evans each striking twice. 28th – 1970 – Jimmy Greaves again, and its his last game when we travel to Palace in the Cup. 28th – 1911- Fog again calls an early end this time the game is with Oldham and its 1-1 at half time when the ref decides he has seen enough .31st - 1959 - Arsenal’s Len Julians becomes the first player to be sent off in a North London derby game. Len would work for Tottenham after he retired as one of the clubs community officers.
