There is a new beginning as the new season starts. As well as lots of goals, birthdays, firsts lasts hello and goodbye as well as some trophies. Its the Almanac as we reach August. One bigger new beginning than most occurred on the 14th (2004) when manager Jacques Santini gave debuts to seven players on the opening day. The 15th in 1987 saws us play Coventry City on opening Day, having met them in the FA Cup Final in the last game of the previous season. While a new beginning for Brad Friedel in 2011 on the 22nd meant he became our oldest debutante at just 40 years and 96 days. Other new beginnings in 1981 as on the 29th as Ray Clemence and Paul Price start their Spurs careers in the same game Steve Perryman made his 600th appearance for Tottenham. The Charity Shield sees us draw with Arsenal in 1991 (10th). The next day the 11th our 5-1 win over Ipswich Town (1962). Then on the 12th in 1961 we beat the FA XI 3-2. The 12th in 1967 also sees Pat Jennings score at Old Trafford in a 3-3 draw. Goals are the order of the day on the 22nd (1959) as Cliff Jones grabs a hat trick away at Newcastle. While Jimmy Greaves scores on his debut at White Hart Lane, shame it was for Chelsea on the 24th (1957). 1982 and Gary Mabbutt is a debut scorer for Spurs debut at home to Luton.on the 28th. The fifth in 1992 and Darren Anderton has a hat trick as we beat Sunderland 3-0. The season starts earlier than usual in 1969 (9th) due to the World Cup the following summer. Jimmy Greaves gets going quicker than normal as we beat Leeds 1-0. Jimmy then scores a hat trick V Forest at home as we win 4-1 on the 31st in 1963. It’s the first time any Spurs man manages this in the League, and it won’t be repeated for 27 years. Some pre-season games include 2010 and on the 4th Gareth Bale scores as we beat Benfica to win the Eusebio Cup. Watford can’t believe their luck when a friendly V Spurs marks Jurgen Klinsmann’s first game for the club and they sell out the ground. Teddy Sheringham is the man on target in a 1-1 draw on the 6th in 1994 1964 and the 5th we travel to Glasgow for a game that attracts nearly fifty nine thousand as a Glasgow Select side beat us 2-4. We return to the city on the 4th (1967) and draw with Celtic 3-3. In front of just 90,000. Well it was Celtics first game since they won the European Cup. Then in 1981 Tottenham take the FA Cup with them when they play Glentoran in Ireland on the 8th in a 3-3 draw which sees a guard of honour for Spurs and the Cup when they enter the field. His partner in crime Ricki Villa entered the world on 18th the same year. In 1978 (9th) they both make their debuts at Nottingham Forest and Ricki scores in a 1-1 draw at Forest. On the 6th (1925) Eddie Baily (right) was born. Joining us in 1946 he played in the 1950 World Cup and was later Bill Nicholson’s assistant manager. 1934 and the 17th sees Ron Henry born. Few players have emerged from the Isle of Wight but birthday boy Charlie Brittan (below left) was born on the 7th in 1887. He joins us in 1911 in the deal that takes Walter Tull to Northampton. 1943 and on the 23th Frank Saul is born on Canvey Island. He joins us as an amateur at 15, plays in the Double season and scores in the 1967 Cup Final. Rare European Action this month and Hearts are beaten 5-0 in the Europa League game away in 2011 on the18th. In their first ever visit to The Lane in 1977 on the 31st we beat Wimbledon 4-0, John Duncan gets a hat trick. Strange tales this month and enough firsts, one last, 1958 and the 27th sees Ted Ditchburn play his last game for Spurs. We play Leeds in Hull after their ground is closed in 1971on the 27th. 2011 and on the 25th Harry Redknapp says ‘If it doesn’t work out its only a loan deal if it does its great” as he signs Adebayor for the season. The 30th in 2013 and the window start’s to slide shut we sign three players on the same day, Christian Eriksen and Erik Lamela as well as Vlad Chiriches. While on the 15th in 1992, our first game in the newly-created Premiership,it’s at Southampton, 0-0. Left - Harry Kane goes flat out in the game V Hearts 2011 The 8th in 2001 and Bill Nicholson’s testimonial brings Fiorentina and nearly thirty six thousand to the Lane. On the 29th in 2004 Bill Nicholson announced his resignation as manager
