There is a new beginning as the new season starts. As well as lots of goals, birthdays, firsts lasts hello and goodbye as well as some trophies. Its the Almanac as we reach August.

One bigger new beginning than most occurred on the 14th (2004) when manager Jacques Santini gave debuts to seven players on the opening day.

The 15th in 1987 saws us play Coventry City on opening Day, having met them in the FA Cup Final in the last game of the previous season.

While a new beginning for Brad Friedel in 2011 on the 22nd meant he became our oldest debutante at just 40 years and 96 days.

Other new beginnings in 1981 as on the 29th as Ray Clemence and Paul Price start their Spurs careers in the same game Steve Perryman made his 600th appearance for Tottenham.

The Charity Shield sees us draw with Arsenal in 1991 (10th). The next day the 11th our 5-1 win over Ipswich Town (1962). Then on the 12th in 1961 we beat the FA XI 3-2. The 12th in 1967 also sees Pat Jennings score at Old Trafford in a 3-3 draw.

Goals are the order of the day on the 22nd (1959) as Cliff Jones grabs a hat trick away at Newcastle. While Jimmy Greaves scores on his debut at White Hart Lane, shame it was for Chelsea on the 24th (1957). 1982 and Gary Mabbutt  is a debut scorer for Spurs debut at home to Luton.on the 28th.

The season starts earlier than usual in 1969 (9th) due to the World Cup the following summer. Jimmy Greaves gets going quicker than normal as we beat Leeds 1-0. Jimmy then scores a hat trick V Forest at home as we win 4-1 on the 31st in 1963.

He must be slipping the year before he scored four against them.

Five goals for Ted Harper at home to Reading in 1930 on the 30th. It’s the first time any Spurs man manages this in the League, and it won’t be repeated for 27 years.

Some pre-season games include 2010 and on the 4th Gareth Bale scores as we beat Benfica to win the Eusebio Cup. Watford can’t believe their luck when a friendly V Spurs marks Jurgen Klinsmann’s first game for the club and they sell out the ground. Teddy Sheringham is the man on target in a 1-1 draw on the 6th in 1994

1964 and the 5th we travel to Glasgow for a game that attracts nearly fifty nine thousand as a Glasgow Select side beat us 2-4. We return to the city on the 4th (1967) and draw with Celtic 3-3. In front of just 90,000. Well it was Celtics first game since they won the European Cup.
